Connectors Used in Computer System

Connectors Used in Computer System

There are a number of connectors in a motherboard to connect peripheral devices like keyboard, mouse, monitors, printers etc.

1.DIN(DutchInterfaceNorm) Connector

They are used in old motherboards, round shaped, have 5pins, uesd to connect DIN standard keyboards.

2.PS/2 Connector

Small round shaped six pin connectors, they are used to connect PS/2 standard keyboard and mouse, they are smaller than DIN connector.

3.D-Connectors

They are D shaped connectors, they are following types

D-Male(Serial Connector)

  25pin connector-for connecting serial modems
9pin connector-for connecting serial mouse, external modem

D-Female
25pin connector(2rows of pins ie;13+12) (Parallel port)- for connecting printers, scanners
15pin connector(3rows of pins ie;5+5+5) (Display port)- for connecting monitor
15pin(2rows of pins ie;8+7) connector (Game port)- for connecting joystick

4.Berg Connector

It is the pin type connector, there will be golden projected pins, used for connecting hard disk drive, cd drive, floppy drive.

40pin-IDE(Integrated Drive Electronics)
50pin-SCSI(Small Computer System Interface) , used in Machintoch, Apple computers
34pin-FDD(Floppy Disk Drive)
16pin-Game port
26pin-Printer/Scanner
10pin-Serial port for connecting mouse,modem

5.RCA(Radio Co-operation of America) Connector

It is seen in old display cards

6.BNC(British Naval Connector) Connector

Round shaped, seen in old network cards and are used to connect co-axial cables.

7.RJ45(Registered Jack)

8pin connector used to connect modem.

8.RJ11

4pin connector seen in modem, uesd to connect telephone lines.

9.Mini Connector

Small round shaped connectors seen in sound cards, they are used to connect mic, speakers.

10.USB(Universal Serial Bus)

They are very high speed connectors, they are used to connect a variety of devices like web cam, usb printers, mouse, keyboard.

11.FireWire

It is like USB, but it can transmit data faster than USB.

12.Power Connectors

In systems SMPS(Switched Mode Power Supply) is used as power supply unit.
SMPS power connectors are classified into two,
a. Powersupply to motherboard
It is the main power connector, for AT(old) motherboards 12 pin connector is used, for ATX motherboards 20 or 24 pin connectors used.
b. Powersupply to external devices
It consist two types of connectors, big molex(4pin) and mini molex(4pin) power connectors.
Big molex or molex is used for provide power supply to Hard disk, DVD/CD drives, mini molex is used for floppy disk.
