Slots used in Computer System

Slots used in Computer System

Slots or expansion slots are used to insert add-on-cards to motherboard, that enables additional features like improve graphics by adding an additional graphics card or improve the sound system by adding a sound card. But in earlier motherboard (passive) all components are added through slots.

1. ISA (Industry Standard Architecture)

  • 8bit or 16 bit
  • Black colour slots
  • Used in old motherboards to add components like display card, sound card etc.

2. VESA(Video Electonic Standard Architecture)

  • Brown coloured slots
  • It comes only with  the ISA 16bit slot
  • Used in old mother board for add display card.

3. AMR(Audio Modem Riser)

  • Smal brown coloured slot
  • Used to connect AMR modem

4. PCI slot (Peripheral Component Interconnect)

  • 32bit and 64 bit
  • White colour slots
  • Used today for add display cards, sound cards, network cards, internal modem.

5. AGP(Accelerated Graphic Port)

  • If we need more graphics display for an application like photoshop, we can add an AGP card
  • Brown coloured slot
  • It is used to connect graphics card
  • Provides high resolution
  • Faster than PCI cards

6. PCIe(PCI Express)

  • Faster than AGP, if we need high graphics support display for  application like animation, we can use PCIe.
  • PCIe is available  only in latest motherboard.
