Ports Used in Computer System


Ports are used to communicate external devices with the motherboard.
Different types of ports are following,

1. Serial port (com1, com2)


  • Its standard name is RS232
  • Bit by bit data transfer
  • Connecting serial devices like mouse, modem
  • But now we are not commonly using this port to connect mouse or keyboards, we are using PS/2 or USB ports 
2. PS/2 Port



  •   Used for connecting mouse, keyboard to the motherboard
  •   Green - for connecting mouse
  •   Violet- for connecting keyboard. 

3. Parallel port (LPT)


  • Standard name is LPT (Line Print Terminal)
  • Byte by byte data transfer
  • Connecting parallel devices like printers, scanners .

4. Game port


It is used to connect joystick, in present game ports are comes along with sound card.

5. USB port


Used to connect USB devices, they are hot swappable i.e. connect and disconnect USB devices with in machine in its working state without restarting the system, so they are widely used for connecting devices like keyboard, mouse, web camera, printer and many more other devices.
